Richard E. Whitacre, Sr.

April 13, 1934 - April 25, 2021 (Age 87)

FT. ASHBY – Richard Eugene “Dick” “Rich” Whitacre, Sr., 87, of Ft. Ashby, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021, at his residence.

Born April 13, 1934, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Albert H. and Dessie (Yokum) Whitacre. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice (Glaze) Whitacre on October 14, 2012; sister, Georgia Lee (Whitacre) Chaney.

Dick served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in Italy. He was a mechanic with Local 37 and Local 32, and he enjoyed working on equipment. There was nothing mechanical that he couldn’t fix. He would drop everything to help anyone in need of his skills. He also enjoyed frequenting yard sales, and he absolutely loved his dog, Mikko.

Dick is survived by two sons, Richard E. Whitacre, Jr. and wife, Donna, Fort Ashby, and David M. Whitacre, Short Gap; granddaughter, Brooke Shilling, Meyersdale, PA; step-granddaughter, Shelley Barman, Fort Ashby; two great-grandsons; three step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary V. Whitacre, Frostburg, and May Snowberger, Cleveland, OH; several nieces and nephews; many friends and former coworkers.

The family would like to thank everyone who helped Rich while he was sick: Pat Blubaugh, Valerie Linn, and Teresa Growden. Special thanks are extended to Bill Peer and family – Pap’s “second family” – as well as to the Veteran’s Administration and the hospice doctors and staff.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland, on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, from noon to 1pm. A funeral service will immediately follow at 1pm with Pastor Patricia Blubaugh and Pastor Charlotte Parsons of GCI Fellowship Group officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
