James C. Sonnie, 83, of Greensburg, died Sunday, November 14, 2021 in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. He was born March 19, 1938 in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Carl T. Sr. and Isabella M. (Gannon) Sonnie. He was a graduate of Greensburg Salem High School and, prior to retirement, had worked as a distribution clerk for the United States Postal Service for 50 years and two weeks. Jim served as Private First Class in the Marine Corps from 1958 to 1959 and was then honorably discharged on medical leave. He was a member of Church of the Brethren, Southwest Greensburg. He was also a member of the VFW Post No. 33, Greensburg and its Honor Guard and had served as president of the Honor Guard for 20 years, the American Legion Post No. 981, South Greensburg, Free Mason for 50 years, Syria Temple, Pittsburgh, and many social clubs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Sheila (Hoffer) Sonnie; and two brothers, Edward Allen and Neil P. Sonnie. He is survived by three children, Sheila Renee Rowe and husband Lenny, of Greensburg, James K. Sonnie and wife Stephanie, of Latrobe, and Cherie Diane Brasile and fiancé Paul Tedrow, of Waynesburg; six grandchildren, Nicholas Ringling, Navy Hospital Corpsman E3/HN Michael Brasile, Marine Corporal Justin Brasile, Hannah Brasile, Michael Sonnie (Amanda), and Cameron Sonnie; four great-grandchildren, Hayden and Dominick Ringling, and Sydney and Madelyn Sonnie; and his youngest brother, Carl T. Sonnie Jr. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday at the LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 516 Stanton Street, Greensburg. A funeral service will begin at 10 AM Thursday in the funeral home with the Rev. David H. Clement officiating. Interment will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park with Full Military Honors accorded by the VFW Post No. 33, Greensburg Honor Guard.
